MAC/MSP showed how a private cellular network can be beneficial:
- Unlike public cellular networks, private cellular networks feature deep integration with the enterprise LAN for seamless operations
- Coverage is designed for the enterprise, not the carrier, to ensure optimal performance for critical enterprise applications
- Cellular spectrum and high availability design ensure high reliability
- Data stays onsite, reducing security risk compared to traversing the public cellular network
Metropolitan Airports Commission: Private Cellular Proof of Concept
As a leader in the aviation industry, the Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC) commissioned a PCN Proof of Concept (PoC) at Minneapolis-Saint PaulAirport (MSP) to investigate several aviation operations use cases. The use cases range from general-purpose mobile device data connectivity to high definition moving maps for workforce automation, to industrial Internet of Things (IoT) for infrastructure monitoring and maintenance. Requirements varied from low bit rate (e.g. sensors), to high throughput (video surveillance, HD mapping), to ultra-reliable performance for mission-critical applications (e.g. infrastructure IoT), to highly secure operations (e.g. gate agent passenger processing). In each case, the CTS PCN PoC met or exceeded the performance of current networking technologies while also identifying opportunities to increase operational flexibility, reduce time to deploy/relocate services and applications, and decrease operational costs.
